A piece of Åland history
The fortress Bomarsund was once the most magnificent building construction in the Åland Islands.
The erection of the gigantic fortress was started in 1832 by the Russian armed forces but after just over 20 years it was only halfway completed. The main fortress was to be a 290 meter long half circled shaped barracks in two storeys, meant to lodge 2.500 men. Around the main fortress six towers with cannon batteries were planned. During the Crimean war, in 1854, the fortress was destroyed.
Bomarsund’s fortress had a great effect on the Åland community at that time, and in present time people still refer to “ the Bomarsund era”. Read more about the fortress and the history surrounding it here.
The inspiration for the design of BOMARSUND comes from the fortress’s hexagonal stones in red granite.
BOMARSUND can with advantage be combined with a plain ring to enhance the design.
BOMARSUND has an oxidized finish.
