The christening gift commissioned for the cruiseship M/S Viking Grace stands as model for the piece GRACE.
Maria Karlström, Head goldsmith at GULDVIVA has designed and handcrafted the christening gift for M/S Viking Grace. These are her thoughts about the piece and the creative process:
“The archipelago of the Åland Islands is an important source of inspiration when I create and design for GULDVIVA. When you see the end result the connection to the Åland nature is often obvious, but the road that leads there is not always a straight one. This was also the case with the christening gift.
My starting point was to include the elements of a modern cruise ship; the feeling of a whole world. The eleven decks of M/S Viking Grace are therefore represented as separate components in the piece. They represent the different rhythms – including tranquility.
The natural continuation for my thoughts was the sea. As islanders we live with the sea. Ships that arrive, turn and leave again are a natural part of life. Suspended in timelessness, safe and secure. The contrasting shape of the waves and the decks are reflected in the design. The components are then arranged together in a stricter, square shape to give the piece a clean design.
The shape of the waves and the decks are also arranged to permit interpretation. If you look closely you can see other shapes hidden in the piece….”
The Grace Spektrolit pendant is adorned with three pieces of Finnish spectrolite.

Sustainability and quality go hand-in-hand. Classic design, climate-smart material and the possibility to repair something when it falls apart are important factors to consider when you purchase a product, for example, a piece of jewellery from Guldviva. This is what we at Guldviva do to ensure that your jewellery is made to last.
Every piece of Guldviva jewellery is made by hand in our own workshop in the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn on Åland. This guarantees high-quality, professional, solid craftsmanship.
All of our jewellery is produced from solid precious metals; it is never filled with other metals or hollow. Even the chains that come with our jewellery, but which we don’t produce ourselves, are of the highest quality, in either 925 sterling silver or 18K gold.
The only base materials we use are either nickel-free 925 sterling silver or 18K gold. We aspire to a completely sustainable production process and today we only use 100 per cent recycled metal.
Your Guldviva jewellery is designed and made to last and to be handed down through the generations. This is why we have a lifetime warranty on all of our jewellery and repair all damages which arise from eventual mistakes in production. We will even be happy to repair damages which arise from wear-and-tear or accidents, but for the price of the normal cost of labour.
POLISHING AND RESTORATION
Silver and gold are metals which endure forever, but the jewellery you wear will often take on signs of frequent use. For this reason, we offer a free professional polishing of all Guldviva jewellery. For example, we can roll the jewellery in a drum with polishing beads, reapply the surface finish by hand and, if necessary, reapply antique treatments. Your jewellery will be like new again.
