Sustainability at Guldviva

Jewellery for generations

Sustainability and quality go hand-in-hand. Classic design, climate-smart material and the possibility to repair something when it falls apart are important factors to consider when you purchase a product, for example, a piece of jewellery from Guldviva. This is what we at Guldviva do to ensure that your jewellery is made to last.

Every piece of Guldviva jewellery is made by hand in our own workshop in the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn on Åland. This guarantees high-quality, professional, solid craftsmanship.

All of our jewellery is produced from solid precious metals; it is never filled with other metals or hollow. Even the chains that come with our jewellery, but which we don’t produce ourselves, are of the highest quality, in either 925 sterling silver or 18K gold.

Your Guldviva jewellery is designed and made to last and to be handed down through the generations. This is why we have a lifetime warranty on all of our jewellery and repair all damages which arise from eventual mistakes in production. We will even be happy to repair damages which arise from wear-and-tear or accidents, but for the price of the normal cost of labour.

The only base materials we use are either nickel-free 925 sterling silver or 18K gold. We aspire to a completely sustainable production process and today we only use 100 per cent recycled metal.

Silver and gold are metals which endure forever, but the jewellery you wear will often take on signs of frequent use. For this reason, we offer a free professional polishing of all Guldviva jewellery. For example, we can roll the jewellery in a drum with polishing beads, reapply the surface finish by hand and, if necessary, reapply antique treatments. Your jewellery will be like new again.

Before you hand over your jewellery, we ask that you first remove hair from chains and any deposits, for example, on earrings. It is usually sufficient to brush the jewellery with a toothbrush, warm water and regular soap.

To take care of your jewellery yourself, make sure that you store it properly and polish it regularly.

Silver oxidizes when it comes into contact with sulfur and becomes discoloured. Sulfur is in the air, on your skin, in cigarette smoke, perfumes, etc. In other words, sulfur cannot be avoided. The more humidity there is in the air, the more quickly the silver oxidizes.

  • Store your silver jewellery in an air-tight plastic bag (i.e. a mini-grip bag).
  • Don’t store your jewellery in the bathroom, where it is often humid.
  • Always remove your jewellery before bathing or showering.
  • Remove your jewellery before physical fitness activities.
  • Polish your jewellery with polish intended for home use.
  • Avoid cleaning pearls with chemical polish, because the strong silver polish can corrode the surface of the pearl. If you can’t clean the piece of jewellery without getting the pearl in the polish, only leave it in for a few seconds.
  • Keep in mind that chemical cleaning will also remove any oxidation that is part of the design.

If you want to be more environmentally friendly, try this DIY tip: line a container with aluminium foil, sprinkle in a little bicarbonate or coarse salt, place your jewellery in it and then pour boiling water on it. The trick of brushing the jewellery with toothpaste will also work, but should only be used as a last resort, because the abrasive in the toothpaste can leave small scratches on the jewellery.
